Dallas Adopt A Family

The Dallas Adopt a Family Committee would like to thank you for supporting us and taking the time to give back to our Dallas community. In 2017 over 200 families and 12 youth were adopted totaling more than 1,000 individuals, including 622 children.  

The holidays are just around the corner and we know our community needs will be high this year. If you are able, we are asking for your help to adopt a local family by providing food for a Christmas meal and gifts for each child in the home. If you are unable to shop, but would still like to adopt a family, monetary donations are welcome. We have volunteers that will take care of the shopping and wrapping for you.

Thanks to the generosity of the Dallas community we have about 108 families adopted so far but need at least 115 more to meet our anticipated need. If you have a bowling group, office group, or other group that could work together to adopt a small, medium or large family to provide a food box and gifts for children, you can sign up still.

Interested in volunteering? Simply complete the online form at the attached link above. Shopping Day will be held on Monday, December 17th, and Wrapping Day is Tuesday, December 17th.On December 19th Donors may drop off their wrapped gifts and foods. Thursday, December 20th volunteers will be assisting families as they pick up what the community has provided.

Donations are needed for wrapping paper, ribbon, tape, gift tags, laundry baskets, laundry detergent, toilet paper, and $25 Safeway and Walmart gift card. All donations can be dropped off at the Dallas Community Resource Center before December 18th.

Dallas Adopt a Family matches local families with community member, agencies, businesses, clubs, and churches who would like to “adopt” them for Christmas. Each adopted family receives food to prepare a Christmas meal and a gift for each child from ages zero to eighteen.

2018 Dallas Winterfest

Have you made your Christmas list? If not, get it ready to give to Santa at the 2018 Dallas Winterfest!

The man we know as Santa Claus has a history all of his own. Today, he is thought of mainly as the jolly man in red, but his story stretches all the way back to the 3rd century. The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas. It is believed that Nicholas was born sometime around 280 A.D. in modern-day Turkey. Much admired for his piety and kindness, St. Nicholas became the subject of many legends. It is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the countryside helping the poor and sick. One of the best known of the St. Nicholas stories is that he saved three poor sisters from being sold into slavery by their father by providing them with a dowry so that they could be married. Over the course of many years, Nicholas’s popularity spread and he became known as the protector of children and sailors. By the Renaissance, St. Nicholas was the most popular saint in Europe. Even after the Protestant Reformation, when the veneration of saints began to be discouraged, St. Nicholas maintained a positive reputation.

The Dallas Area Visitors Center is proud to host Dallas’s annual Winterfest celebration, scheduled for Friday, December 7th from 5 pm to 8 pm. This annual event draws around 2,000 community members.

Sounds of Christmas

This year is Guthrie Park’s 31st Annual Sounds of Christmas program. Guthrie Park is a 501-c non-profit organization dedicated as a meeting and gathering place for the community. Their purpose is to promote Cultural events such as music, art, and dancing. Finances are generated through public donations and rental fees paid for the use of Guthrie. There are no paid employees under this organization. Besides the board of directors several people, who refer to themselves as “Friends of Guthrie”, volunteer their time and talents to assist and care for Guthrie Parks’ needs.

The 31st Annual Sounds of Christmas program is a benefit to raise funds for the maintenance and operation of Guthrie Park Community Center. It is also meant as a way for the community to gather and share in an old fashioned Christmas celebration. Just as was done over 100 years ago when Guthrie was a community school.

All events at Guthrie Park are family friendly! Alcohol and controlled substances are strictly prohibited.

Musicians will be performing Holiday music live! Artists such as Once Blind, Sarah & Jason, and Cash & Company.

There will also be prizes raffled off to the audience. Tickets cost $1 and $5 each. All proceeds will go toward the maintenance and operation of Guthrie Park. Tickets will be sold only at the show, and you must be present in order to win. There are a wide selection of items to win such as; gift cards, toys, tools, jewelry, Holiday treats, treasures and much more! This is a great opportunity to treat yourself, or regift for a loved one.

Santa Claus will also be there after the show to visit with the children. A Sing-A-Long of Christmas songs and music jam after the show with words provided! Dress casually or dress up in your favorite Holiday Attire! Refreshments will be provided, but feel free to bring and share your favorite Holiday treat. Seating is limited and doors open at 5:45 pm. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

In November, we will be registering families in need of assistance. As families register they will be matched with our generous donors. Donors can expect to receive their adoption packet no later than the first week of December.

Trick N’ Treat Celebration

This Wednesday, October 31st, Dallas Area Visitors Center partners with Morrison Campus students to throw our annual Trick N’ Treat!

Trick N’ Treat local businesses in one spot! And this year we will have carnival games for kiddos to play too!

The Dallas Area Visitors Center is pleased to host this safe and weather proof event at the Morrison Campus on Main Street. The free Trick N’ Treat happens from 3 pm to 6 pm for children ages zero to twelve years old.

We average over six hundred and fifty people participating with twenty plus businesses on display, giving out goodies to kids and their parents. This year the students are working on games to play, a haunted house and a photo area to capture your kiddo in their costume. The costume contest happens every half an hour, starting at 3:30 pm with the last contest at 6 pm. Exciting prizes for all of our ghouls, goblins and witches to win!

To meet all of our treat needs we are holding our first annual Chocolate for Charity Contest! The contest runs from 8 am Wednesday, October 17th to 8 am on Wednesday, October 31st. For every two bags of candy donated to the Trick N’ Treat Celebration you will receive one entry into the drawing. You may enter as many times as you would like. You must write your name and contact information on the entry form. October 31st a student from Morrison Campus will draw a winning entry form. Winner will be called or emailed notifying them of their winnings.

Prizes includes a standard oil change from Mid Valley Ford, your business and logo (if applicable) highlighted on the Chamber and the Visitors Center social media and the Trick N’ Treat webpage. You can bring your candy donations to any chamber event, or stop by the Chamber office at 168 SW Court St.

We are so grateful to everyone at Morrison Alternative Campus for allowing us to host our annual Trick N’ Treat event. The students start their work in September learning about the various aspects of event planning. They are taking that information and implementing it over the course of the next month. The students are learning everything from logistics planning, marketing, PR, and budgeting to secure sponsors, getting donations and working with community. Mid October the students work hard to transform their school into a safe, weather resistant and fun place for parents to bring their kiddos on Halloween.

Dallas Public Library

Dallas Public Library is hosting a Friends of the Dallas Public Library Book Sale this weekend at the Dallas Civic Center! The event will be held Friday, October 19th from 3pm to 7pm, and Saturday, October 20th from 10am to 3pm. The last hour on Saturday will be a Bag Sale. All hardcovers will be one dollar, and paperbacks only fifty cents. This is a great opportunity to both expand your home library and support our local library.

If you are a book worm like myself you can’t wait to jump at the chance. But the local Dallas Library does more than just lend books to the public, or throw book sales. The Dallas Public Library strives to ensure that there are programs available for everyone.

Children of all ages can enjoy their Summer Reading Program. Tuesdays and Thursday morning they hold Story Time for your little ones that include finger-plays, songs, and even simple crafts to engage them in learning. Let us not forget about Lego Building also on Thursdays in the afternoon.

If you are struggling with a research project, book report, or simply just want to expand on your current knowledge the library offers resources to you as well. Their homework and career center makes equipment and resources available to all who need it. Or maybe you want some fun to but are on a budget. The Dallas Public Library provides Cultural Go Passes to a household which can provide up to free admission to a destination. These destinations include; Evergreen Aviation Museum, Gilbert’s House, and many other fun educational locations for the family to visit.

In this day and age where so many of our public libraries are closing due to lack of funding and support this book sale offers a unique opportunity. We hope you take advantage of the time not only to thank those who work so hard to engage our children in learning and providing resources to the public, but also find out what other unique programs are available to you.

Visitors Center

Dallas Area Visitors Center is working close with the students at the Morrison Campus to plan this year’s Trick N Treat, providing weekly “Event Planning” classes. Dallas 3rd Annual Glow Run

Next Saturday, October 13th, is Dallas’ 3rd Annual Glow Run!

This annual Glow Run has always been an event our community has enjoyed since day one. The first year the Glow Run was held, only 100 people were expected. Over 500 people joined in the festivities and each year they continue to grow. City of Dallas partners with national and local sponsors who want to reach hundreds of event participants and their families in an engaging and entertaining environment. With all the fun, it is no surprise that people continue to join in on the festivities year after year.

What is the Glow Run? The Glow Run is a Halloween themed glow in the dark 5k run or walk and the proceeds will go to Christmas Cheer. Dallas Christmas Cheer is a local non-profit program that provides food assistance to children and families in need over the holiday season. This is a great way to spread the holiday feeling to those in our community who are in need such as seniors or families going through hard times.

The registration deadline is Friday, October 5th at Dallas City Hall by 5:30 pm. You can also register on race day at the Academy Building between 6 pm and 7 pm. The cost to participate is $25 per a person. A team or family of four or more can expect a discount of $3 per a participants so gather everyone you know, however you must turn in forms together.

The 5k course will start and finish at the Academy Building in historic downtown Dallas, corner of Main St and Academy St. The course will consist of a mix of paved and trail surfaces through Dallas City Park. Runners will receive a head lamp, glow stick, and glow paint. The City Park will be decorated for the event by local community businesses, and will have a foam machine waiting at the finish line as no good race ends clean. Dress up and have fun. Costumes are encouraged!

Dallas School District #2

The Dallas High School Sports Marketing class, Leadership class, and Cheer Team have teamed up with the Susan G Komen Foundation to help spread awareness and support for breast cancer. Dallas High School has been selected among Willamette Valley schools to represent the Breast Cancer foundation this year.

As October is Breast Cancer awareness month, they are selling “Fight Like a Girl” shirts for students, staff and anyone else who would be willing to support this cause. It is also a great opportunity to come represent at our “Pink Out” games next month.

All proceeds will go to the Susan Komen foundation to help local breast cancer survivors and their battle.

In 1980, Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became the Susan G. Komen organization and the beginning of a global movement. What was started with $200 and a shoebox full of potential donor names has now grown into the world’s largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer. To date, they have invested more than $2.9 billion in groundbreaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 60 countries. Their efforts helped reduce deaths from breast cancer by 38 percent between 1989 to 2014 and they won’t stop until their promise is fulfilled.

Susan G. Komen has transformed how the world treats and talks about this disease and have mobilized the largest and most passionate community. Since 1982, they have funded more than $988 million in research, more than $2.2 billion in education, screening, and treatment, serving millions worldwide.

The combination of science, education and direct help to people facing breast cancer has led to a 39 percent decline in mortality since 1989. Komen has funded more breast cancer research over their history than any other nonprofit to date. Komen focuses on supporting those with the fewest resources; uninsured, under-insured and low-income women and men unable to access care. Komen and grantees educate people about breast cancer where they live, work, play, and pray to empower them with information they need to make informed breast care decisions for themselves and as they advocate for others.
