AdvoCare – Lisa Preston

When AdvoCare came into their lives, Jeff Preston had been struggling with energy problems for 20 plus years, and Lisa had been struggling with weight problems for just as long. Jeff had been tested for everything out there and their doctor could not figure out why he was not staying awake, and his medication was no longer working. They had given up hope that things would ever change. Lisa started going to a gym, working out 4 to 5 times a week, and eating as healthy as she could with no change. This was a huge disappointment to her and her personal trainer.

Dallas Christmas Cheer

Dallas Christmas Cheer has been around for 50 years and is a grass-roots program that was started by local community members. Members who wanted to make sure children and families in need would not go hungry over the holidays. Joining in the efforts made all those many year ago was Dallas Volunteer Fire Department and other volunteers who set about fixing toys and gathering up items for meals. By working together they were able to serve about 50 local families in need.

It was then that Curt Lamb took over the reins. Curt continued to manage the program for over 40 years and in 2000 handed Christmas Cheer over to his son, Warren, and family. Warren Lamb, and Sue Lamb with Scott and Eric strive to continue the legacy of their father and grandfather who loved our community, and to honor his memory.

From these roots Christmas Cheer continues to grow and is a well-known, well-respected local non-profit 501c3 organization that helps families who have fallen on hard times. Christmas Cheer has a Board of Directors and committee members who work hard to keep this program running smoothly.

Directors are responsible for organizing and conducting food drives, fund-raising, outreach, oversight of senior gifts, coordinating book drives with schools. Board Directors manage the application process, attend meetings, as well as contact and secure sponsors for projects. Every December 24th volunteers are coordinated for delivering the packages during the Christmas Cheer pack-out event.

Thanks to Dallas residents generosity Christmas Cheer reaches over 300 local families, approximately 1000 individuals each year. This includes 500 children, and 100 senior citizens. These families live in the greater Dallas area and receive a food box that has enough food for the holiday meal and beyond. The box also includes books and, if donated, toys for the children, or gifts for senior citizens.

The program has evolved over the years but their goal remains the same: to serve those in need within the greater Dallas area.

Isabel Sanchez – The Churro Loco Lady

The Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for their monthly Chamber Luncheon. We are excited to have Isabel Sanchez to speak to our business community. Sanchez will be able to offer her perspective as a business owner making the journey from idea, to success. Why should you listen to what she has to say? A vacation that turned out to be more work than play sparked a crazy idea for Isabel Sanchez and her husband, Daniel Huerta, that led to Portland’s red-hot truck, Churros Locos

During a trip along the Oregon coast, Sanchez and her husband met a gelato business owner who was lamenting about the lack of smell exuding from his shop to attract customers. In a flash, inspiration struck.

“My husband and I automatically thought of our childhood memories and our favorite dessert: churros,” Sanchez recalled, realizing that the powerful and nostalgic aroma of churros from her past could prove to be a bountiful business venture.

Both Sanchez and Huerta had full-time regular jobs, but the allure of the churro was something they knew they wanted to capitalize on. Instead of venturing out to open a traditional, brick-and-mortar churro shop, their wheel turned to a different track.

“We needed something that would provide flexibility, as well as minimal risk and investment at the beginning,” she said, highlighting the reasons why a food truck made the most sense for their churro business.

“We started small, slow, sweet and steady,” she said, noting that customers, friends and family slowly but surely began finding out and spreading the word about Churros Loco through social media, and their following and catering requests took off from there.

And while a food truck can provide some uniquely tricky obstacles like mechanical issues, especially for the dainty vintage truck that carts around Churros Locos, it’s been anything but a bumpy ride since Sanchez hit the road in 2013.

Should mechanical malfunctions arise, Sanchez breathes a sigh of relief that her husband is quite the handyman, lest Portlanders be deprived of their churros for too long.

The churro sundae in particular, a combination of piping-hot churros and cold ice cream, is what the people go truly loco for. Fans of the Portland Timbers and Thorns soccer teams have been indulging in these sundaes the most, as Churros Locos’ prime spot is the Providence Park Max Station just outside their playing field.

“Looking at the demographics, we knew there was a market and demand for a familiar and cultural dessert in Portland. Our hope is to develop a strong demand [for churros] across generations.”

Ask Sanchez her favorite part of owning a food truck, and her answer is deliciously simple: getting to share the churro love.

“We love how a delicious dessert can reach so many and help everyone come together in various scenarios: weddings, birthday parties, and street fairs.”

That churro love has spread, too. Churros Locos was selected to participate at the World Street Food Congress in Singapore, bringing their churros to an international audience of hungry foodies. But Sanchez isn’t letting this honor make her forget about Portland.

“Locally, we want to continue sharing our churros with Portlanders via our Churro Mobile, and eventually open a permanent location.”

Mad Hatter Day

October 6 is a day set aside each year to bring out your silly side while celebrating National Mad Hatter Day. The day was chosen due to the label tucked in The Mad Hatter’s hat band that read “In this style 10/6”.

The fictional character, The Hatter or The Mad Hatter from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, is typically acting silly, and that is how the creators of this day decided on their theme of silliness for National Mad Hatter Day. Sir John Tenniel illustrated The Mad Hatter and all of Lewis Carroll’s colorful characters beginning in 1864. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865.

In 1986 some computer-folk in Boulder, CO celebrated a general day of silliness, inspired by the drawings don by Sir Tenniel. It was announced that year on computer networks, becoming more popular as people realized its value – some people did less damage by celebrating silliness than if they had done their jobs.

In 1988 it was first recognized as an official holiday and received its first national press coverage.

“Mad as a hatter” is a colloquial phrase used in conversation to refer to a crazy person. In 18th and 19th century England mercury was used in the production of felt, which was used in the manufacturing of hats. People who worked in these hat factories were exposed daily to trace amounts of the metal, causing some workers to develop dementia caused by mercury poisoning. Thus, the phrase became popular as a way to refer to someone who was perceived as insane.

Taking our inspiration from The Mad Hatter, or any of Carroll’s characters for that matter, we may pursue laughable, absurd or even confusing adventures on National Mad Hatter Day. Break out from the usual routine. Ask ridiculous riddles much like The Hatter’s own, “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” Play croquet with plastic pink flamingos or wear a funny hat to work. Throw a tea party, just don’t forget to, “change places!”

Did you know Lewis Carroll, a pen name for Charles Lutwidge Dodson once answered The Hatter’s riddle? In the 1896 edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Carroll wrote as part of his preface, “Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!”

Dallas 3rd Annual Glow Run

Next Saturday, October 13th, is Dallas’ 3rd Annual Glow Run!

This annual Glow Run has always been an event our community has enjoyed since day one. The first year the Glow Run was held, only 100 people were expected. Over 500 people joined in the festivities and each year they continue to grow. City of Dallas partners with national and local sponsors who want to reach hundreds of event participants and their families in an engaging and entertaining environment. With all the fun, it is no surprise that people continue to join in on the festivities year after year.

What is the Glow Run? The Glow Run is a Halloween themed glow in the dark 5k run or walk and the proceeds will go to Christmas Cheer. Dallas Christmas Cheer is a local non-profit program that provides food assistance to children and families in need over the holiday season. This is a great way to spread the holiday feeling to those in our community who are in need such as seniors or families going through hard times.

The registration deadline is Friday, October 5th at Dallas City Hall by 5:30 pm. You can also register on race day at the Academy Building between 6 pm and 7 pm. The cost to participate is $25 per a person. A team or family of four or more can expect a discount of $3 per a participants so gather everyone you know, however you must turn in forms together.

The 5k course will start and finish at the Academy Building in historic downtown Dallas, corner of Main St and Academy St. The course will consist of a mix of paved and trail surfaces through Dallas City Park. Runners will receive a head lamp, glow stick, and glow paint. The City Park will be decorated for the event by local community businesses, and will have a foam machine waiting at the finish line as no good race ends clean. Dress up and have fun. Costumes are encouraged!

Dallas Area Visitors Center is working close with the students at the Morrison Campus to plan this years Trick N Treat, providing weekly “Event Planning” classes. The students are learning everything from logistics planning, marketing, PR, and budgeting to securing sponsors, getting donations and working with the community. The students are actively looking for donations of bags of candy and small prizes to hand out to the little ghouls and goblins! We are expecting 500 kiddo’s dressed up and ready to Trick N’ Treat!  Any and all donations are greatly appreciated! Donations can be dropped off at the Chamber Office or at the Morrison Campus!

Dallas School District #2

The Dallas High School Sports Marketing class, Leadership class, and Cheer Team have teamed up with the Susan G Komen Foundation to help spread awareness and support for breast cancer. Dallas High School has been selected among Willamette Valley schools to represent the Breast Cancer foundation this year.

As October is Breast Cancer awareness month, they are selling “Fight Like a Girl” shirts for students, staff and anyone else who would be willing to support this cause. It is also a great opportunity to come represent at our “Pink Out” games next month.

All proceeds will go to the Susan Komen foundation to help local breast cancer survivors and their battle.

In 1980, Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became the Susan G. Komen organization and the beginning of a global movement. What was started with $200 and a shoebox full of potential donor names has now grown into the world’s largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer. To date, they have invested more than $2.9 billion in groundbreaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 60 countries. Their efforts helped reduce deaths from breast cancer by 38 percent between 1989 to 2014 and they won’t stop until their promise is fulfilled.

Susan G. Komen has transformed how the world treats and talks about this disease and have mobilized the largest and most passionate community. Since 1982, they have funded more than $988 million in research, more than $2.2 billion in education, screening, and treatment, serving millions worldwide.

The combination of science, education and direct help to people facing breast cancer has led to a 39 percent decline in mortality since 1989. Komen has funded more breast cancer research over their history than any other nonprofit to date. Komen focuses on supporting those with the fewest resources; uninsured, under-insured and low-income women and men unable to access care. Komen and grantees educate people about breast cancer where they live, work, play, and pray to empower them with information they need to make informed breast care decisions for themselves and as they advocate for others.

At Beal Pumpkin Patch there is free entry and free parking. The pumpkin patch will be full of pumpkins in various shapes and sizes, Pumpkin Patch yard games, hay bale pyramid, I-Spy nature trail with list of items to find on the trail, FFA student animals, picnic tables, food and drinks available for purchase, and a Fall Harvest Gift Shop with Fall and Halloween wreaths, floral arrangements, decor, and treats made by the Dallas High School Culinary program. Every Saturday in October there will be “Pet Rock Painting”. Cost is $3 per person. A host and all materials will be supplied, and includes a pet rock with googly eyes to paint, and a carrying container to take your pet rock home in. Come enjoy in all the fun.

Love Note Day

Almost as old as the first written language, the love note historically has been one of the most romantic ways to tell that special person how you feel about them. However, with the fast pace of our modern day lives, the art of writing love notes and exchanging them with one’s sweetheart is slowly dying. Love Note Day aims to change this and is held on September 26th.

A love letter or note is a way to pen down one’s deepest feeling about another person. It does not have to be romantic or sappy. It can convey a vast selection of emotions, from adoration to anger, from joy to sadness, and from admiration to disappointment. This day can be at its most effective when the recipient of the message isn’t aware that Love Note Day even exists. Consequently, a loving message will come as a pleasant surprise, and just be what they need to hear.

So walk away from your computer screen, bring out the scented paper, the fanciest pen you have, and find yourself an inspiring place to sit and get cracking on that love note. Give it to your sweetheart, perhaps during a nice meal or while on a walk in the park. If you don’t have time to hand write your love note, maybe you could sent your love a nice email that says how much you love and appreciate them. Leave some love notes around your home for your loved one to find. Hide them in their lunch or their gym bag, stick the note to the bathroom mirror, so that’s the first thing they see in the morning, or quietly slip it into their pockets before they leave home. It doesn’t have to me someone special. Who says a love note can only be for a romantic partner? Send a note to a friend or a family member to tell them how much you love them. Read love notes and letter written by famous people – maybe they will inspire you to write one of your own.

The oldest surviving Valentine’s Day love letter in the English language dates back to 1477? Called the Valentine’s Day Love Letter, the note was written by Margery Brew to her fiancé John Pasto.
