Trick N’ Treat Celebration

This Wednesday, October 31st, Dallas Area Visitors Center partners with Morrison Campus students to throw our annual Trick N’ Treat!

Trick N’ Treat local businesses in one spot! And this year we will have carnival games for kiddos to play too!

The Dallas Area Visitors Center is pleased to host this safe and weather proof event at the Morrison Campus on Main Street. The free Trick N’ Treat happens from 3 pm to 6 pm for children ages zero to twelve years old.

We average over six hundred and fifty people participating with twenty plus businesses on display, giving out goodies to kids and their parents. This year the students are working on games to play, a haunted house and a photo area to capture your kiddo in their costume. The costume contest happens every half an hour, starting at 3:30 pm with the last contest at 6 pm. Exciting prizes for all of our ghouls, goblins and witches to win!

To meet all of our treat needs we are holding our first annual Chocolate for Charity Contest! The contest runs from 8 am Wednesday, October 17th to 8 am on Wednesday, October 31st. For every two bags of candy donated to the Trick N’ Treat Celebration you will receive one entry into the drawing. You may enter as many times as you would like. You must write your name and contact information on the entry form. October 31st a student from Morrison Campus will draw a winning entry form. Winner will be called or emailed notifying them of their winnings.

Prizes includes a standard oil change from Mid Valley Ford, your business and logo (if applicable) highlighted on the Chamber and the Visitors Center social media and the Trick N’ Treat webpage. You can bring your candy donations to any chamber event, or stop by the Chamber office at 168 SW Court St.

We are so grateful to everyone at Morrison Alternative Campus for allowing us to host our annual Trick N’ Treat event. The students start their work in September learning about the various aspects of event planning. They are taking that information and implementing it over the course of the next month. The students are learning everything from logistics planning, marketing, PR, and budgeting to secure sponsors, getting donations and working with community. Mid October the students work hard to transform their school into a safe, weather resistant and fun place for parents to bring their kiddos on Halloween.

Recently they donated money to every class room in Dallas to make sure teachers had the funds they need to teach our children. Now United Way is holding a pajama drive for Dallas foster children. Mad Hatter Day

October 6 is a day set aside each year to bring out your silly side while celebrating National Mad Hatter Day. The day was chosen due to the label tucked in The Mad Hatter’s hat band that read “In this style 10/6”.

The fictional character, The Hatter or The Mad Hatter from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, is typically acting silly, and that is how the creators of this day decided on their theme of silliness for National Mad Hatter Day. Sir John Tenniel illustrated The Mad Hatter and all of Lewis Carroll’s colorful characters beginning in 1864. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865.

In 1986 some computer-folk in Boulder, CO celebrated a general day of silliness, inspired by the drawings don by Sir Tenniel. It was announced that year on computer networks, becoming more popular as people realized its value – some people did less damage by celebrating silliness than if they had done their jobs.

In 1988 it was first recognized as an official holiday and received its first national press coverage.

“Mad as a hatter” is a colloquial phrase used in conversation to refer to a crazy person. In 18th and 19th century England mercury was used in the production of felt, which was used in the manufacturing of hats. People who worked in these hat factories were exposed daily to trace amounts of the metal, causing some workers to develop dementia caused by mercury poisoning. Thus, the phrase became popular as a way to refer to someone who was perceived as insane.

Taking our inspiration from The Mad Hatter, or any of Carroll’s characters for that matter, we may pursue laughable, absurd or even confusing adventures on National Mad Hatter Day. Break out from the usual routine. Ask ridiculous riddles much like The Hatter’s own, “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” Play croquet with plastic pink flamingos or wear a funny hat to work. Throw a tea party, just don’t forget to, “change places!”

Did you know Lewis Carroll, a pen name for Charles Lutwidge Dodson once answered The Hatter’s riddle? In the 1896 edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Carroll wrote as part of his preface, “Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!”

Dallas Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center has announced that we will not be directing next year’s City events. While the events such as Summerfest are expect to continue we will not be the organization leading them. We have decided to hand over the events in an effort to become less of an event Chamber, and more of a service Chamber. We hope that by better focusing our efforts to better serve our community.

Harvest CrossFit

The idea of jumping into a CrossFit class with other experienced practitioners can be intimidating. Harvest CrossFit hears you, and understands. Another Beginner Class will be kicking off Monday, September 24th. This 6 week program will allow you to learn about CrossFit with other beginners! CASA has another big event coming our way, Casino Night: CASA Blanca. Come enjoy a fun evening of hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and gaming in support of Polk County’s Children. Team Casino will be running the tables with catering by Wild Pear. CASAs guest speaker is Marilyn Jones director of the State of Oregon Child Welfare Programs. This is an excellent chance for a fun date night with the money going to a terrific cause.

 

Citizens Bank

It with a heavy heart that we prepare for Susan Morill, Branch Bank Manager, to retire. While we wish her the best, and look forward to seeing her outside of the bank we will miss her daily presence. Citizens Bank will be holding a Retirement Party for Susan on Tuesday, September 25th at 8:30 am. Please join them as they celebrate Susan’s next phase in life.

Tuesday on the Square

Our next and last Tuesday on the Square is quickly approaching on September 18th. Dallas became a HEAL city of Oregon a few years ago and, with that in mind, it is the inspiration for our next Tuesday on the Square.

The HEAL Cities campaign is a partnership between the League of Oregon Cities and the Oregon Public Health Institute, made possible with generous support from Kaiser Permanente.

Oregonians want to eat better, move more, and feel energized to do the things that they love. However, in many cities, wholesome food and opportunities for regular physical activity are out of reach for most or all of those who live or work there.

The HEAL Cities Campaign is a resource to help civic leaders create healthy communities. They know what works: city policies that expand options for every person to be physically active and to have affordable and convenient access to wholesome foods, as well as policies that build a culture of wellness for municipal employees. With generous funding from Kaiser Permanente, the HEAL Cities Campaign intends to invite every city to take the next step towards health and livability. Through their funding Dallas was able to install our new Pickle ball Courts, with plans for further additions in the future.

The Campaign has three components. First, it educates about the impact our built environment and food environment have on our health, emphasizing the status quo presents serious health risk to children.

Second, the Campaign offers alternatives. Campaign staff have compiled a library of model policies and best practices in use by cities around the country to create more options for active living, healthy eating, and workplace wellness. This policy menu is updated on a regular bases to provide as many options as possible.

Third, because each city is unique, the Campaign provides free technical assistance to help each city identify, adopt and implement the policies that are right for its community. Drawing on the expertise of Campaign partners the Oregon Public Health Institutes and the League of Oregon Cities, the Campaign is well-prepared to help Dallas expand the healthy options we offer.

Join us on the square Tuesday, September 18th as the city features our local gyms, studios, and all things health. Dallas works hard to ensure that its citizens are aware of what healthy options are available to the community. There will be food, and bouncy houses for children to enjoy as you explore what “the healthiest downtown in America” can offer.

Tailwinds and Flawed Theories of Self

“This is sort of a rambling post, so buckle up and get a death grip on your coffee, because I’m not sure where this is going either…

I saw someone write on Instagram recently that they feel like they have progressed in eight years what “any other reasonably fit person” could do in eight to ten months of training. I found I recognized myself in that comment, and also I found that I wished I knew the person better so that I could grab them by the shoulders and give them a good shake. It’s taken me a long time to stop feeling like everyone else who dedicated themselves to learning to ride a bike would be faster than me. After my first year of racing, I was able to turn that thought process in a positive (ish), much like the person I’m quoting here did — they talked about how they loved the process and how they had learned so much, etc., etc. But there was a still a tone of negativity in there, one that I was able to detect probably only because I once wrote nearly exactly the same damn post.

The way I coped with my belief that as this person put it, “any reasonably fit person” would be faster than me was not entirely unhealthy. I adopted a mentality of radical acceptance — you have no talent, I told myself, but that’s okay because you’re willing to work harder. You have no experience, but you’re willing to learn. Talent and experience don’t mean anything, if you’re willing to fail. Everything is going to be harder for you than it is for other people, but you will persevere.

So, not all bad. I mean, this attitude helped me through a lot of really difficult and frustrating seasons. After all, was I wildly and immediately talented at racing enduro? No, definitely not, and my ideas of embracing being bad at things and not caring about failure and being open to learning — all of those were good things. All of those ideas made me better. But at the base there was a problem. My whole theory was built on a shitty (and untrue) foundation. When I was positive and writing a blog post it came out like “you’re not talented, but it’s not about talent anyway” but when I was having a bad day or struggling with a trail or unsatisfied with my race results, it sounded a hell of a lot more like “you suck and everything is harder for you, you suck and everyone is better than you without even trying.”

So when I read this person’s instagram post, I couldn’t help but read between the lines and see “deep down I don’t think much of myself but look, I’ve turned it into a positive and I’ve used the whole ‘not thinking much of myself’ as a catalyst and an inspiration and look how far I’ve come despite the fact that at the end of the day I think that I suck.”

Here’s the thing — it’s good to be able to turn a bad thing (i.e. not having prodigious amount of talent) into a good thing ( a stronger work ethic). The problem is when it becomes a narrative about who you are. The problem is when it becomes a coping mechanism, a shield, a way of avoiding actually being your best self. The problem is when it’s not just an objective assessment (hey I’m not that talented but it’s cool), but rather an emotional, vitriolic attack on yourself (“you suck”). When that’s the case it doesn’t matter how you package it — it’s a big problem.

No, I didn’t come into mountain bike racing with a prodigious talent or loads of experience in a similar sport. But I had (and have) other advantages, ones that were often forgotten while I was busy explaining to everyone how little talent I had, while I was busy explaining away my mistakes and failures by saying ” well, I suck.” It’s a typical problem — as humans, we are quick to notice the wind in our face, and quick to take our tailwinds for granted.

When I read this person’s post, I thought a few things:

  1. Just like we are quicker to notice our headwinds, we are also finely tuned to notice the people who are faster/better/stronger than us. So when this person wrote “any reasonably fit person,” they were probably looking at just a select few anomalies — a handful of people they knew who had progressed insanely quickly. They probably forgot about all the people who showed up at the gym a handful of times and then quit. “Reasonably fit person” probably did not encompass every person who had ever run a mile or held a dumbbell over their heads. If it did, the perspective might be quite different.
  2. Eight years is a long time. Most people won’t work on something for eight years, especially if they don’t immediately have success. So yeah, maybe a lot of people out there COULD beat you if they trained solidly for 8-10 months, but they won’t. So who cares? Sometimes the hardest part is getting started, and even if there are a lot of potentially talented people who never got started (or quit before they really got anywhere) well, who cares? It doesn’t matter what other people could achieve, it matters what you do achieve.
  3. And ultimately, you’re doing something awesome, so keep doing the awesome thing and stop thinking about everybody else.”

West Valley Taphouse

West Valley Taphouse is getting ready for “Tap into Polk County”. September 14th through the 16th they will be throwing “Fresh Hop Fest” to lead into the county wide week of Polk Beer. Come down to West Valley Taphouse where they will be tapping into a new Fresh Hop IPA each day, all from local producers.

This Thursday Barley Browns Beer will be taking over the tap. West Valley Taphouse seven of their beers on tap with free merchandise and games!

St. Thomas Jazz Festival

St. Thomas is kicking off their annual Jazz Festival this Sunday, September 9th. Stroll the beautiful winery grounds of Kathken Winery, relax by the trout pond under the shade and have a family-friendly good time for three great local charities: CASA, Sable House, and Polk Community Free Clinic. King Louse and LaRhonda Steele, and Ellen Whyte with Sue Orfield with be featured for the audiences’ enjoyment. Come and support the community charities with a great time.

Johnny Limbo & The Lugnuts

Starting as a party gag in 1978, Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts have become one of the most popular bands to perform the classic oldies hits. The Lugnut’s fame has spread beyond the Pacific Northwest, dazzling audiences from Washington State to Washington D.C. Their performances have been enthusiastically received at corporate parties, civic celebrations, fairs, fund raisers, concert halls, conventions and televised events. From the beginning their goal was to have fun. This has not changed in 40 years and of course, as always, you are invited to join in the good times!

The long list of annual return engagements is a testament to the fact that Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts is “Can’t miss” entertainment and a hit with all ages; from kids to grandparents.

Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts have shared the stage with many national acts including Chuck Berry, Chubby Checker, the Righteous Brothers, the Mamas and the Papas, Three Dog Night, Jan and Dean, Johnny Rivers, Rick Nelson, The Ventures, and Paul Revere and the Raiders. They toured the Far East with stops in Japan, Korea, and the Philippines. The Lugnut’s played for the Oakland A’s at the opening game and were invited by NIKE to perform for a special party during the closing of the Los Angeles Olympics. Each year the list continues to grow.

Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts emphasize showmanship, creating a never-ending energy on stage. The electricity generated by this sight and sound experience results in packed dance floors at every performance. Ask anyone who has experienced Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts and they will tell you… “Rock and Roll will never die, and the Lugnuts are the reason why!”

Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts will be playing here in Dallas for our closing Sounds of Summer. Do not miss all the fun, food, and music. The band will be kicking off at 6:30pm on the Academy Lawn. Take Your Pants On A Walk Day

July is great for going to the beach and watching fireworks, but apparently it is also good for… taking your pants for a walk?! That is right – July 27th is Take Your Pants on a Walk Day. A whimsical name for a good day. Celebrated each year this day is a day to get outside and go for a nice walk. It makes sense that where you go, of course your pants will also go.

There are many jokes and cartoon drawings about putting your pants on a leash and actually walking them as you would your pet. We guess that one could do that, however, we would recommend make sure that those are extra pants from your closet and that you are wearing some while on your walk.

Today is about getting out and getting exercise. Make it a fun time with your friends. Take a nice walk along the river, or through the park and enjoy the outdoors, while at the same time, getting the health benefits from your walk, maybe even take your camera with you!

This year Take Your Pants for a Walk Day is easy for us Dallas residents, and the surrounding community to observe. Tomorrow is also the kick off for Summerfest! Come down to the Courthouse lawn and show off your hometown pride. Tomorrows schedule starts with the Willamette Valley Greeters with networking and shopping opportunities for local Chamber business owners. Vendor booths, BINGO, and activities with the National Guard start at 10 in the morning and goes all day until the concert. Throughout the day we will have local entertainment on stage such as Parkside Self Defense, Clouded Skies, and LuAnn Ritts. Starting at 12:30 come down and dunk a dignitary in the dunk tank. Dallas Fire Department will be holding a Waterball Competition at 6 pm. To finish off this great day of fun Ants In the Kitchen will be playing at the Academy stage from 7 pm to 9 pm.

Can you think of a better way to enjoy the summer weather, and take your pants on a walk? Neither can we. Come down, dunk a few people, explore the vendors, and visit with the community.
