Faith Christian School

Faith Christian School is a ministry of Faith Evangelical Free Church. They have been serving the families of Dallas and the surrounding area for over 30 years! Their teachers and staff members love the Lord and are excited to share their faith with the students. God is the center of all they do.

Students, families, and staff all comment on the special “feeling” of the school. People have often said this is a Christian school like no other. They strive to ensure that everyone feels like family. Former students who are in college often come back and volunteer their time teaching drama, music, art, band, etc. because they love the school so much. They come back to visit often and stay very connected to their teachers. Graduates who have grown and married are now starting to send their own children to school here.

Their curriculum is high level and Christ centered. Their SAT test scores are often extremely high. They expect a lot from our students and they challenge them to do their best at all times. But they are also able to offer help to the child who struggles academically because of the small class sizes.

Character development is very important to them and every year the students are encouraged to be people of integrity, compassion, forgiveness, kindness, generosity, etc. Mission’s Week is a favorite activity of the school. They encourage the students to listen for God’s call in their lives. Many students have gone on to do short term missions’ trips and some are serving full time in the mission field.

All students starting in first grade learn computer skills. They begin with keyboarding skills and move on to type all their writers’ workshop papers by fifth grade. They offer preschool through eighth grade. Their teachers are highly qualified and certified through the state of Oregon. They have an excellent teacher to student ratio. They are especially proud of their Junior High worship band. They also offer Chapel, PE, Library, and Computer every week.

These qualities and more make Faith Christian School a great choice. Come and take a look for yourself and see just how wonderful Faith Christian School really is!

Embrace Your Geekness Day

Pokemon fans to Final Fantasy nerds, LARP’ers to Medieval Reenactors, rise up and be proud! Don your Lyre Pipe hats and your rattan swords, polish up your gunblades and bundle up your pokeballs, Embrace Your Geekness Day is for you! No matter what your fandom or what impassions you to creativity and brings skip to your step, cry it loud and proud! The Geek and fan community is truly one of the most amazing and creative groups out there, and every year more geeks are crying their fandoms loud and proud.

What exactly does it mean to be a geek? Well, definitions differ (and believe me, you don’t want to look up the Victorian age definition of a geek) but in today’s world it just means one thing. A geek is completely obsessed with one or more subjects, and can speak fluently on it for hours, sounding like a walking encyclopedia of geeky facts.

Wellcat Holidays organized the holiday stating that we all should be proud of the things that define us, and little defines us as much as those things we’re passionate about. “Dungeon games, comic books” we should have no shame about anything we’re into. In fact, you should shout it loud and proud. Geekdom brings people together, whether they’re sharing their love of a mutual fandom, or talking about their individual fandoms to inspire others to check it out, they love community. Some of the most amazing costuming and tech gadgets have been put together by people inspired by the shows, stories, and games that they love. That’s the power of being in touch with your imagination, and that’s what Embrace Your Geekness Day is all about.

If you have a fandom you’ve been hiding in a closet, don’t let it sit there unloved anymore. Get out into the world and wear your favorite shows t-shirt, talk to your friends about the stuff you love, maybe even try an arts project. Don’t restrain yourself to just comic books, dungeon games, and mangas. What are you passionate about? People, animals, sports? Embrace it. Embrace Your Geekness Day reminds us that we’re not alone in our Geekness, and the world is a better place for our bright showing of imagination, creativity, and pride. Now get out there and get your geek on!

Announcing Julie Huckensteins Retirement

Dear Community Partners and Friends,

After 32 rewarding years in community colleges (18 at Chemeketa) I am retiring on June 30, 2019.    It is difficult to personalize an e-mail, but I want to say how much I appreciate the friends I have made and support I have felt from those of you who I have had the privilege to get to know.  The decision to retire was difficult because I truly enjoy serving as President of Chemeketa.  My husband Jim has been retired since 2016.  We plan to do some traveling and spend more time with our daughters and grandchildren.

The last four years as President has been the most enriching and inspiring experience of my career.  It has allowed me to interact with faculty, staff, students and community leaders and learn how our community college makes a difference to each individual we serve.  I have seen first-hand how we as community partners work together to improve lives, improve livelihoods and give hope to those who may not have experienced it previously.  We are a better community as a result of the work we have done together.

Over the next year I am committed to doing my best each and every day to continue our work together to serve our communities.   I will continue to be engaged to move our programs, projects and partnerships forward. We have a great team at Chemeketa—board members, executive leadership team, faculty and staff and I know the college will continue to thrive and meet the needs of our communities.

The board of education will begin the search process for the next president immediately.  The search will be conducted nationally and planning is underway.  Please watch for information about community input and forums.  As an integral partner of Chemeketa we value our input.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Julie Huckestein

President/CEO

Chemeketa Community College

It is with a heavy heart that we prepare to bid farewell to Julie Huckestein, Chemeketa Community Colleges President. Julie Huckestein has been a cornerstone member of our community, dedicated to serving her students by providing the best education possible.

Good luck Julie in all of your future endeavors!

Chamber Luncheon – Shawn Howe

This next speaker series luncheon on Monday, July 16th, will be from a Dallas High School graduate who has coached on some of the nation’s largest stages including University of Tennessee, USC, Memphis, and others. Shawn Howe, new Defensive Coordinator at Coastal Carolina University, will be sharing his story with us.

On February 23rd, Shawn Howe was named the Defensive Line Coach by Coastal Carolina head football coach Joe Moglia.

Howe spent the last three seasons as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Dixie State University. Last season, Howe’s defense ranked 21st in the nation in fewest passing yards allowed and picked off 13 passes.

Prior to his arrival to DSU, he was the defensive line coach at Humboldt State University for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. During his tenure at HSU, Howe coached one All-American and six all-conference performers while his 2014 unit led the nation in sacks.

Howe worked with the Southern California football program for two seasons, including the 2012 season with current CCU defensive coordinator Marvin Sanders. Howe as a graduate assistant working with the defensive line in 2012 and was a defensive assistant in 2011. Before his time with the Trojans, Howe spent four years in the state of Tennessee with a brief stint at Gardner-Webb. In 2010, he was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Tennessee helping the Volunteers reach the Music City Bowl. However, from January to June 2010 Howe was the defensive line coach with the Runnin’ Bulldogs. He spent the previous three years as a graduate assistant coach at Memphis. He worked the Tigers’ defense the first two years and coached the tight ends in 2009. Memphis played in the New Orleans Bowl in 2007, and the St. Petersburg Bowl in 2008.

He came to Memphis after working as a volunteer assistant at North Carolina State in 2006, helping with the defensive line. He began his coaching career at Rocky Mountain College, his alma mater, serving as the outside linebackers coach in 2004, and 2005.

Howe played defensive end and linebacker at College of the Redwoods in Eureka, CA in 2000, and 2001, earning All-Mid-Empire Conference first team honors in 2000 when he was the team’s Defensive Lineman of the Year. He then transferred to Rocky Mountain College, where he was a two-year starter at defensive end. He graduated from Rocky Mountain College in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health.

This Monday Shawn Howe will be speaking on his journey from small town Dallas, to some of the biggest fields in the nation. You don’t want to miss this!

Teddy Bear Picnic Day

It’s a wonderful day for a stroll in the woods! Grab your favorite stuffed toy, a hamper goodies, and set off for a Teddy Bear Picnic Day! Why not arrange an outing with friends and family, and enjoy the summer sun, fun and games, and creativity with your favorite toys?

Celebrated mainly in the United States, Canada, Australian and in some parts of Europe, the Teddy Bear’s Picnic Day is celebrated on July 10th. If you are planning on going down to the woods today for a picnic, why not plan a big family surprise picnic that will have the kids super-excited or at the very least, have your teens in stitches at the silliness of it all!

How to Celebrate Teddy Bear Picnic Day:

Step One: Find your favorite teddy bears. Spruce them up in readiness for attending the picnic. After all, even they get to enjoy a little primping and preening before their big outing.

Step Two: If it’s a girl then dress her up in dresses or accessories, and if it’s a boy dress him up in smart clothes. Go all out; wash your teddy bear, and refurbish your teddy bear. Sew a teddy bear if you a) have the talent and ability, and b) if you don’t have a teddy bear, or enough of them to make a picnic. If your kids are already in on the picnic, have them make their bears a teddy bear suitcase to keep them busy in the background.

Step Three: Prepare the food. No Teddy Bear’s picnic would be complete without the right food. Don’t forget that bears love honey and other sweet things! Some ideas of what to make or buy include: Sandwiches, salad (use “bear paw” servers to serve it with), cupcakes, honey cake, teddy bear shaped crackers (and teach your kids how to dunk a teddy bear biscuit in milk)

Step Four: Pack everything needed into an old-fashioned picnic basket. Make sure to include plates, cups, utensils, and picnic rugs to sit on.

Step Five: Play teddy bear games and hold bear competitions. Even the adults can have some fun. Hold a competition for the best-dressed bear, the smallest and tallest bears, for the best-named bear. Play hid and seek with the bears, the rules are up to you. Have the kids play act being a bear. Play look out for the bear. Just have fun!

Step Six: Hold some teddy bear activities. Paint bear paws on the children’s faces. Make a bear out of clay or play-dough. Read bear stories.

Step Seven: Tell the children it’s the teddy bear’s bedtime when it’s time to wrap the picnic. It will help prevent tears and complaints and you can lay it on thick, asking the children to look after their tired teddies.

Just have fun with this silly little holiday, we are lucky enough to live in a beautiful community with city and national parks to take advantage of. Get out and spend time in nature, and more importantly with family!
