A Note from the CEO

First of all I would like to thank our Chamber of Commerce members for their investment in the Chamber. Doing what we do for the community is important. It is their time, talents, and treasure investments that make it possible for us to accomplish what we do for you while you are at work.

2018 has been quite a year with many changes and upgrades. Below are a few highlights:

  • Scholarships for students who are wishing to study business were awarded through Young Pros
  • We began Wake Up Wednesday to meet members’ desire for increased connectivity
  • Hosted our 61st Annual Community Awards Banquet
  • 15 new members to date
  • Continued improvements to the Chamber of Commerce website and its value to you
  • New Online Journal began – a blog designed to keep you informed and amplify our search engines
  • Worked within the region to improve Tourism with Polk County Tourism Alliance
  • Created new video marketing for Dallas with Workforce Development Internship with Dallas High School
  • Hosted the first annual Mid-Willamette Valley Leadership Summit
  • Created new value – added and repackaged membership structure

By restructuring your membership investment we have packaged things for your convenience based upon what your normal participation and interests are. You will notice, therefore, that the investment rates have changed accordingly. For a clearer look at what your membership now includes, take a look at our website and scroll to the bottom to thumb through the new Investment Menu. You will notice that it has got a few things to finalize, including the addition of a marketing campaign called ‘Dallas Live!’ but we wanted to share it with you, and our Chamber members.

As always, we are here to help and discover how we can best serve you and our community. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Some of you have asked for them already, and yes 2019 membership investment invoices and a stats sheet are on their way out for those of you with a January billing date.

2018 Dallas Winterfest

Have you made your Christmas list? If not, get it ready to give to Santa at the 2018 Dallas Winterfest!

The man we know as Santa Claus has a history all of his own. Today, he is thought of mainly as the jolly man in red, but his story stretches all the way back to the 3rd century. The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas. It is believed that Nicholas was born sometime around 280 A.D. in modern-day Turkey. Much admired for his piety and kindness, St. Nicholas became the subject of many legends. It is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the countryside helping the poor and sick. One of the best known of the St. Nicholas stories is that he saved three poor sisters from being sold into slavery by their father by providing them with a dowry so that they could be married. Over the course of many years, Nicholas’s popularity spread and he became known as the protector of children and sailors. By the Renaissance, St. Nicholas was the most popular saint in Europe. Even after the Protestant Reformation, when the veneration of saints began to be discouraged, St. Nicholas maintained a positive reputation.

The Dallas Area Visitors Center is proud to host Dallas’s annual Winterfest celebration, scheduled for Friday, December 7th from 5 pm to 8 pm. This annual event draws around 2,000 community members.

Join us as we kick off the holiday season on the beautiful Polk County Courthouse lawn with Santa, tree lighting with our Mayor and First Citizen, food trucks, Christmas vendors, live music, hot cocoa, cookies, and more! This year we will be celebrating a good ol’ fashioned holiday season, complete with a Christmas Carol “sing-along”. Don’t miss your photo opportunities for every child with Marion-Polk County Princesses and Santa Claus!

Shop some great vendors such as Beal’s Christmas Tree Farm, Oregon Snowballs, Paparazzi, Banners by Jules, Scentsy, Color Me Shabby, Color Street, The Hat Place, and so many more!

Wake Up Wednesday News

Beal Christmas Tree Farm

Beal Christmas Tree Farm is preparing for the holiday season! They will be opening this season the day after Thanksgiving. Beal will be open every Friday through Monday from 9 am to 4 pm. Beal is a choose and cut, simply point at the tree your family wants and they will send out a team to cut, carry, shake, and tie your tree. If it is a family tradition to cut down your tree, it is an available option. For businesses you can have your tree delivered to your office.

The shop is open and ready to help you prepare for the season. Wreaths can be custom made and waiting for you to take them home.

MV Advancements

Job assessment sites needed! What is it? A local business can become a job assessment site by providing the venue for short-term, trial work experiences to individuals in need of career exploration. These job tryouts can vary in time frame from one brief visit up to 120 hours of work that is completed at no cost to the employer. Skill assessments and direct supervision are provided by MV Advancements staff. Individuals participating in trial work experiences are covered under Oregon’s Workers Compensation Insurance, leaving business liability free.

What are the steps?

  1. Say, “Yes!”
  2. A job coach will schedule a time to come in and learn the particulars of the job needing done.
  3. The individual seeking assessment learns and performs the tasks under the direct supervision of the job coach.
  4. Pay nothing

Harvest Crossfit

After lasts months YoungPros nonprofit fair they have partnered with Sable house to help provide simple necessities that everyone needs. If you are interested in donating toilet paper, toothpaste, and any other household necessities then grab some on your next trip to the store and drop them off with Harvest CrossFit!

Advocare

Lisa Preston with Advocare is getting ready to hold another Nutrition Class. If you are interest in learning what to eat, what to avoid, and proper portion sizes then come learn from one of the best! It will be held this Sunday, November 11th, at the Iron Jungle starting at 4 pm.

Visitors Center

Thank you to everyone who helped Trick N Treat come together. It was a wonderful family and community event with around 1,400 people in attendance. Thank you to our community for the candy donations, and to the hardworking Morrison Campus students! Jason Saunders was our lucky winner of the Chocolate for Charities drawing!

Winterfest is a month away! On November 15th the Visitors Center is looking for volunteers to help with our Winterfest lighting. We will be starting at 5:30 pm at Dallas Fire Department. Pizza will be provided for our helpful citizens!

Chamber of Commerce

Novembers Chamber Luncheon is approaching fast, and we will be continuing this year’s theme “Great things can come from small towns.” Gregg Peterson from Independence Grill will be discussing his journey through homelessness to business owner.

Many children in our community are in need of pajamas to wear at night. For children in the foster care system, that can also mean they are away from home, and away from family. United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley is coordinating their 6th Annual Pajama Drive. Working with organizations in Marion, Polk, and Yamhill counties to provide pajamas for foster children and others needing pajamas. Bring your new pajamas for infants, toddlers, school-aged, and lots of teens to the Chamber of Commerce to donate!

Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center is partnering with Christmas Cheer to supply families in need this holiday season with goodies. Bring your jar of peanut butter to our office and help those in need.

Mid-Willamette Valley Leadership Summit

On November 6th, from 9 am to 2 pm we will gather at Dallas Retirement Village to grow as business and community leaders. Please join us for the first Mid-Willamette Valley Leadership Summit.

What will the Summit entail?

We invite all leaders and their teams from the Mid-Willamette Valley to come learn how to implement proven methods for growing as a community of understanding.

Tickets are $77 per person.

What community doesn’t need better communication and more revenue?

We sense an urgency for increasing our region’s capacity to build relationships and increase the collective efficacy of the regional community. With that in mind, we are fulfilling our role as a community catalyst by launching the very first Mid-Willamette Valley Leadership Summit.

We will gather on November 6th, 2018, at Dallas Retirement Village, for discussion of how we as business and community leaders, can lead from the front to become a community of outward thinkers and community of understanding. Along with our capacity to work together. We will share some out of the box ways to increase revenue.

We’ll learn about having an outward mindset by an organization that has a proven method to change lives and transform organizations.

In the afternoon session, we’ll hear from a procurement specialist who will share secrets to attaining contracts to increase your business revenue.

Dallas Adopt A Family

The Dallas Adopt a Family Committee would like to thank you for supporting us and taking the time to give back to our Dallas community. In 2017 over 200 families and 12 youth were adopted totaling more than 1,000 individuals, including 622 children.  

The holidays are just around the corner and we know our community needs will be high this year. If you are able, we are asking for your help to adopt a local family by providing food for a Christmas meal and gifts for each child in the home. If you are unable to shop, but would still like to adopt a family, monetary donations are welcome. We have volunteers that will take care of the shopping and wrapping for you.

In November, we will be registering families in need of assistance. As families register they will be matched with our generous donors. Donors can expect to receive their adoption packet no later than the first week of December.

If you are interested in adopting a family, please complete the online donor registration form at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DAAFHelp  and return it to the Dallas Resource Center (182 SW Academy St. Suite 220). Donor registration must be completed and received no later than Thursday, November 29th at 5pm.

With your help, we can make this a wonderful Christmas for the families in our community.

Interested in volunteering? Simply complete the online form at the attached link above. Shopping Day will be held on Monday, December 17th, and Wrapping Day is Tuesday, December 17th.On December 19th Donors may drop off their wrapped gifts and foods. Thursday, December 20th volunteers will be assisting families as they pick up what the community has provided.

Donations are needed for wrapping paper, ribbon, tape, gift tags, laundry baskets, laundry detergent, toilet paper, and $25 Safeway and Walmart gift card. All donations can be dropped off at the Dallas Community Resource Center before December 18th.

Dallas Adopt a Family matches local families with community member, agencies, businesses, clubs, and churches who would like to “adopt” them for Christmas. Each adopted family receives food to prepare a Christmas meal and a gift for each child from ages zero to eighteen.

Trick N’ Treat Celebration

This Wednesday, October 31st, Dallas Area Visitors Center partners with Morrison Campus students to throw our annual Trick N’ Treat!

Trick N’ Treat local businesses in one spot! And this year we will have carnival games for kiddos to play too!

The Dallas Area Visitors Center is pleased to host this safe and weather proof event at the Morrison Campus on Main Street. The free Trick N’ Treat happens from 3 pm to 6 pm for children ages zero to twelve years old.

We average over six hundred and fifty people participating with twenty plus businesses on display, giving out goodies to kids and their parents. This year the students are working on games to play, a haunted house and a photo area to capture your kiddo in their costume. The costume contest happens every half an hour, starting at 3:30 pm with the last contest at 6 pm. Exciting prizes for all of our ghouls, goblins and witches to win!

To meet all of our treat needs we are holding our first annual Chocolate for Charity Contest! The contest runs from 8 am Wednesday, October 17th to 8 am on Wednesday, October 31st. For every two bags of candy donated to the Trick N’ Treat Celebration you will receive one entry into the drawing. You may enter as many times as you would like. You must write your name and contact information on the entry form. October 31st a student from Morrison Campus will draw a winning entry form. Winner will be called or emailed notifying them of their winnings.

Prizes includes a standard oil change from Mid Valley Ford, your business and logo (if applicable) highlighted on the Chamber and the Visitors Center social media and the Trick N’ Treat webpage. You can bring your candy donations to any chamber event, or stop by the Chamber office at 168 SW Court St.

We are so grateful to everyone at Morrison Alternative Campus for allowing us to host our annual Trick N’ Treat event. The students start their work in September learning about the various aspects of event planning. They are taking that information and implementing it over the course of the next month. The students are learning everything from logistics planning, marketing, PR, and budgeting to secure sponsors, getting donations and working with community. Mid October the students work hard to transform their school into a safe, weather resistant and fun place for parents to bring their kiddos on Halloween.
